IGP Jammu, DC caution against rumour mongering

JAMMU, Aug 18: 2G mobile Internet services, a day after their restoration in five districts of Jammu region, were snapped again on Sunday yet again to check rumours-mongering though situation all across the region remained peaceful with no report of any untoward incident from anywhere.
Since morning as rumours about some untoward incidents in Gujjar Nagar locality of Jammu and in Rajouri district and re-imposition of Section 144 etc., flew thick and fast, thus creating a panic like situation all across Jammu district. Long queues of people could be seen outside petrol pumps in different areas of city and adjoining areas.
However, before things could spiral out of hand, the district administration came in action mode with a flurry of steps, first by snapping 2G mobile internet services and then addressing press conferences and disseminating information that the situation was perfectly normal with no incident of violence reported from anywhere across the region. While Divisional Commissioner Jammu, DC and senior police officers addressed media, later in the day, the DGP Dilbag Singh also reviewed security and law and order situation in Jamu, Rajouri and Udhampur districts.
While addressing a press conference, the Divisional Commissioner Jammu Sanjeev Verma clarified that there was complete normalcy in Jammu division and urged people not to pay any heed to rumours and maintain peace and harmony.
The Divisional Commissioner stated that the internet service, which was restored in some districts, became ineffective on Sunday due to technical fault while broadband service was still active. “However, the mobile internet services remain suspended in some districts as preventive measures,” he added.
The Div Com warned that the rumour mongers, who were deliberately trying to disrupt the peace in the region, would be dealt strictly under law.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu Mukesh Singh too denied rumours about re-imposition of Section 144 of the CrPC prohibiting assembly of more than four persons at a spot and closure of schools in Jammu, saying the situation in the district was absolutely normal.
“Rumours are being circulated regarding some incident in Rajouri or Gujjar Nagar. There is also a rumour regarding a strike in Jammu due to which there are long queues at petrol pumps... All such rumours are false. No incident has taken place anywhere as is being circulated. The 2G network has temporarily been disconnected due to some technical reasons, which is being rectified and efforts are on to restore connectivity as soon as possible,” IGP Jammu said. He also said the rumour mongers would be dealt with strictly.
While addressing media, the District Magistrate Jammu Sushma Chauhan too described the situation as absolutely normal however she clearly stated that mobile internet services were snapped to prevent rumour-mongering.
“The situation in Jammu district is absolutely normal. There is no reported untoward incident in any part of the district or for that matter the entire state. The mobile internet has been stopped to prevent rumour mongering and prevent people from creating any panic. Some rumours about re-imposition of 144 and closure of schools are absolutely baseless. Things are absolutely normal. All citizens are expected to contribute in maintaining law and order in the district by not spreading any data or information which is baseless and unverified because that too will amount to a punishable offense,” Chauhan said in a statement, issued to press.
Officials later disclosed that the authorities concerned directed service providers to snap the services around forenoon. The official said the decision was taken to check rumour-mongering and maintain peace and tranquility.
Low-speed mobile Internet services were restored in five districts of Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur and Reasi during the intervening night of Friday and Saturday after remaining suspended for nearly a fortnight.
As panic gripped people across Jammu region following rumours of violence in Gujjar Nagar, some untoward incident or law and order problem in Rajouri district, SSP Rajouri too clarified that there was no law and order problem in the district.
“No such incident has taken place anywhere in territorial jurisdiction of Rajouri district and situation is completely peaceful and normal like as it should be. All the sections of society have been extending their best possible cooperation to authorities and normal life has already reached at its best. BSNL mobile services stand restored since Saturday morning and other services shall also be restored. Schools have already started functioning. Rumour mongering will be dealt strictly under law,” SSP Rajouri Yougal Manhas said.
SSP Jammu Tejinder Singh too asked people not to believe rumours and there had been no incident of violence in any part of Jammu. “Details of person spreading rumours should be brought to the notice of nearest police station and we shall take appropriate action,” SSP Jammu said.
Mobile internet service was snapped on August 4 midnight just hours before the Government of India announced revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated it into two Union Territories to prevent rumour mongering.
Earlier Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Sanjeev Verma along with IGP Jammu Mukesh Singh had visited Rajouri and interacted with the civil society members. DIG Rajouri Poonch Range Vivek Gupta, Deputy Commissioner Rajouri Mohammad Aijaz Asad and SSP Yougal Manhas were also present on the occasion.
The Divisional Commissioner and IGP Jammu appreciated the people of Rajouri for maintaining peace and promoting brotherhood and harmony in the district. They also appealed the civil society members to cooperate with the civil and police administration in maintaining law and order in the district.
The people in Rajouri and Poonch urged the administration to restore mobile service in twin border districts as well.
