India, Pak trade fire on LoC

JAMMU, Aug 20: An army jawan was killed and four others were injured as Pakistani army yet again targeted forward posts and villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in Krishna Ghati sector of Mendhar Poonch district on Tuesday.
PRO Defence Lt Col Devender Anand, while confirming ceasefire violation by Pak, said, “The unprovoked firing from across the border in Krishna Ghati sector started around 11.00 AM. Pak army targeted forward posts and civilian population with mortars and firing from small arms, prompting a befitting response from the Indian army. In the exchange of fire in Mendhar sector, Naik Ravi Ranjan Kumar Singh attained martyrdom.”
“Naik Ravi Ranjan Kumar Singh, 36, belonged to village Gope Bigha, tehsil Dehrionson, district Rotasa, Bihar and is survived by his wife, Rita Devi. He was a brave, highly motivated and sincere soldier. The nation will always remain indebted to him for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty,” he added. The cross-border firing between the two sides continued till late afternoon.
“Indian army responded strongly and effectively. Heavy damage to Pakistan army posts and casualties to Pakistan soldiers have been inflicted by Indian army jawans,” spokesperson said.
Last week, the Pakistan army had opened fire in Nowshera sector of nearby Rajouri district leaving an Indian soldier dead. Pakistan also suffered a number of casualties in the retaliatory action, the spokesman said.
