India, Pak trade heavy fire in Poonch

JAMMU, Sep 7: After a lull for around a week, Indian and Pakistan armies Saturday yet again traded heavy fire after the latter violated ceasefire by resorting to unprovoked firing targetting forward Indian border posts and villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in Krishna Ghati, Shahpur and Khari-Karma sectors of Poonch district.
PRO Defence Lt Col Devender Anand said, “Small arms firing and mortar shelling from across the border started in Krishna Ghati sector of Mendhar around 7.45 AM and later in Poonch sector at 5.30 PM targetting forward posts and villages along the LoC in Poonch district.”
“There was no report of any casualty on the Indian side in the firing,” he said. PRO Defence said that the Indian army retaliated in equal measure. The cross-border shelling between the two sides continued till late evening.
On September 1, an army jawan was killed when Pakistan targetted forward posts and villages in Shahpur-Kerni sector, raising the death toll in ceasefire violations by the neighbouring nation in the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri since July to eight -- six soldiers and two civilians.
In the meanwhile, locals said Pakistani army resorted to heavy shelling from around 7 AM to 8.00 AM and then again 11.30 AM to 12.00 noon in Krishna Ghati sector in Mendhar.
Pak army opened heavy firing in Khari-Karma sector also during 7.00 AM to 8.00 AM. After few hours’ lull, the Pak army resorted to heavy shelling targetting forward army posts and villages on the Line of Control (LoC) in Shahpur around 5.30 PM. Indian side too retaliated and this exchange of fire continued till 8.00 PM.
“Few houses also got damaged in mortar shelling by Pakistani army in Krishna Ghati sector,” said a senior Police Officer.
