Plastic waste awareness, management programme organized

LEH, Sep 17: The Deputy Commissioner & Chief Executive Officer, LAHDC, Leh Sachin Kumar Vaishya convened a meeting at DC Conference hall today with all the Sarpanches of Leh District regarding Swachhta Hi Seva with the theme of ‘Plastic waste awareness and management’ -a massive nationwide awareness and mobilization campaign on Swachhta.
The Swachhta hi seva 2019 is being organized from September 11 till October 2, will witness mass awareness generation activities on plastic waste management between these days.
DC Leh urged on all Sarpanches to get rid of their villages, offices and work places from single-use plastic. He also drew people’s attention to the hazardous effects of single use plastic on the environment and the health of animals and aquatic life. He appealed to use eco-friendly bags for shopping and other purposes.
DC also asked the Sarpanches of different areas to collect all plastic wastes from their surroundings at an indentified place and ensure its proper disposal with the support of the local administration. He further added that the collected plastic wastes will then be recycled and effectively disposed off.
Besides, a threadbare discussion were held on various issues that included funding problems to Panchayats, authorization of revenue collection, strengthening of 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendment Act 1992. The Sarpanch of Saboo raised a serious issue regarding present disposal system of wastes at bomb guard that spreading air pollution making the environment unhealthy.
Answering the questions, DC assured that a mechanised plant for disposal of wastes will be set up shortly that will tremendously resolve this long pending issue. DC further said that the people will witness huge development in every sphere of life at grass root level in the coming days.
