SRINAGAR, Sep 21: An uneasy calm prevailed in Kashmir valley a day after the administration imposed fresh restrictions in parts of Srinagar and other sensitive pockets of the valley amid shutdown and ‘indefinite’ communication blackout on the 48th consecutive day today.
Business establishments as usual remained closed across the valley while public transport was off the roads. However, partial movement of private vehicles could be seen at some civil line and uptown areas.
In the old city, deployment of police and paramilitary forces remained intact and the interiors continued to be blocked with razor wires and iron barricades as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.
So far as Civil Lines and uptown localities of Srinagar city are concerned, deployment of government forces has been thinned to some extent.
Attendance in schools, which according to the government, were declared open up to high school level witnessed zero attendance of students; attendance of teachers was also witnessed thin in view of the general strike.
Government and semi government offices, courts, banks and post offices also recorded thin attendance of employees due to the non-availability of public transport.
Officials in district court Srinagar said that attendance of practicing lawyers continued to remain thin which has severally affected routine court proceedings.
It may be in place to mention that government imposed stringent curfew like restrictions on August 5 and blocked all modes of communication across the state the day provisions of Article 370, which accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was scrapped through Presidential order.
State of Jammu and Kashmir was also divided into two separate union territories with Jammu and Kashmir with legislation and Ladakh without legislation. Government in a separate order, however, announced that there would be single High Court for both UT’s.
Reports reaching here from other district headquarters including south and north Kashmir suggested that life remained crippled amid shutdown and public transport was off the roads.
The continuous suspension of transport service in restive valley hampered inter-district road connectivity badly.
