SRINAGAR, Oct 3: While Kashmir remained hot on political and security fronts since August 5, the weather conditions have now started changing with significant dip in day and night temperatures.
The fall in mercury level has resulted in cold during night, evening and morning. After a long dry spell Valley recently experienced light rain further dipping the temperature. The weatherman has predicted light rains intermittently in coming days.
With the drop in temperatures and subsequent cold, the people are slowly switching over to warm clothes particularly from evening.
Last year, Kashmir had experienced the season’s first snowfall on November 6. Last winter was comparatively very harsh with series of light and heavy snowfall and freezing cold doing the winter. Because of the snowfall the people had to face lot of problems particularly the power shortage.
However, recently the administration announced uninterrupted power supply in Jammu and Kashmir during coming winter. Presently, the city is witnessing unscheduled power cuts these days.
The Jammu and Srinagar highway remained closed repeatedly last year during winter die to snowfall and subsequent landslides. This led to shortage of essentials and subsequent hoarding and profiteering. It is to be seen how the new dispensation is going to deal with such a scenario. Jammu and Kashmir will be a Union Territory on November 1. A lieutenant governor will replace the present governor Satyapal Malik.
There is still enough time left for stocking of items for winter. But uncertainty due to the ongoing spontaneous shutdown has led to concerns among the people. Before the onset of winter, kangris, firewood for hamams and woolen cloths are in great demand. Last year, this time the kangris were on sale in large number in markets. This time with markets shut there are no signs of the kangris.
