Day 72: Shutdown continues

SRINAGAR, Oct 15: Situation continued to remain tense in restive valley on 72nd consecutive day today amid shutdown and communication blackout in the aftermath of revocation of special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
Business activities continued to remain suspended and public transport off the roads even as the administration lifted restrictions from everywhere and partially restored mobile phone service in Kashmir after 71 days.
A considerable movement of private vehicles and cabs could be seen on roads; however shops and other commercial establishments across valley including Srinagar remained closed.
Roadside vendors selling vegetables, fruits, clothes and other items have been regularly setup their stalls on roads in different areas. Attendance of employees in government and semi government offices has increased than previous days.
Students however continued to abstain from classes at all educational institutions which were declared open by the administration in ten districts of Kashmir. Teachers and other staff however mark their presence on regular basis.
Rail service from Banihal to Baramulla also remained suspended on 72nd running day following uncertain situation in Kashmir. Communication system including prepaid mobile phones, broadband and mobile internet continued to remain suspended since August 4 midnight in the valley.
State government as per announcement restored postpaid mobile service on all networks from October 14 afternoons across Kashmir.
Reports said that shops and other business establishments in old city remained closed and a very thin movement of traffic was witnessed on roads while deployment of police and paramilitary forces remained intact to maintain law and order.
