SRINAGAR, Oct 19: With rumours regarding winding up of prepaid mobile service rife in Kashmir valley, users are bemused with changing policies of the government post August 5 decision on Jammu and Kashmir.
The continuous suspension of prepaid mobile service in Kashmir has taken toll on lakhs of users who have been left ‘incommunicable’ over the past two months.
If surmise’s which have taken people by surprise are taken into account, prepaid mobile service will be soon winded up in Kashmir. However, the step which is yet a rumor if proved right will not only make around 60 lakh prepaid users in Kashmir to lost their contacts but also cause huge losses to telecom companies.
With this, around 10 lakh people mostly youth who earns their livelihood through refilling of prepaid connections will be rendered jobless like those associated with online business.
“This step of the government will in no way serve any purpose, this will only create problems for the people of Kashmir who have already been suffering due to communication breakdown since August 5,” said Showkat Ahmad, a prepaid subscriber.
He wished that the rumors about bringing prepaid mobile service to an end prove rumors only as the number of subscribers using prepaid connections is higher than postpaid subscribers.
It is pertinent to mention here that postpaid mobile service was restored after two and half months across Kashmir on August 5. The decision although taken late was however hailed by the people.
“Since I don’t have any postpaid connection, I will certainly suffer as the government also barred porting facility. Prepaid service will be no longer available, porting system was barred, now what has been left for a commoner,” said Firdous Ahmad another prepaid user.
Communication system was suspended on August 4 midnight, few hours before the centre downgraded special position of Jammu and Kashmir. While landline and postpaid mobile service has been restored, government seems to be indecisive about the restoration of other modes of communications in restive valley.
