Day 77: shutdown affects life in Kashmir valley

SRINAGAR, Oct 21: Life continued to remain affected across Kashmir including summer capital Srinagar on 77th consecutive day today amid shutdown and communication blockade.
Markets across valley remained shut while shops at few places were partially opened at few places while an increasing movement of private vehicles was seen on roads. Public transport however continued to remain off the roads for 77th running day.
State government pressed buses run by SRTC on roads on certain routes of the city to ensure people do not face any inconvenience due to non-availability of public transport.
A good number of street vendors had setup their stalls at many places in Srinagar while valley’s famous flea market locally known as Sunday Market witnessed substantial rush of people purchasing clothes and other items.
Educational institutions remained as students continued to skip classes in view of the prevailing situation in the valley after abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A.
Attendance of employees in government departments has however considerably improved while private establishments remained constantly closed.
77 days passed, communication system barring postpaid mobile service and landline phones continued to remain suspended in entire Kashmir. Authorities snapped all modes of communication in Kashmir on August 4 midnight few hours before center’s decision on Jammu and Kashmir.
Banihal to Baramulla rail service also remained suspended due to the prevailing situation in Kashmir valley.
