Terms it as violation of religious liberty

SRINAGAR, Nov 10: National Conference (NC) today deplored the government on disallowing two successive annual observances of Khwaja Dighar and Eid- e- Milad- un- Nabi (SAW), saying the measure tantamounts to violation of religious freedom.
The party condemned the step of disallowing devotees from offering congregational prayers at Dargha Hazratbal and other shrines following Eid- e- Milad observance. In a statement the party said the measure corresponds to scuttling of people’s religious freedom. “The most venerated shrines and mosques of valley which used to be abuzz with all sorts of religious activities are unfortunately desolate now. The doors of many grand mosques and shrines were even kept closed for devotees even on many auspicious occasions and annual Urs Celebrations. It is unfortunate to hear that the administration has not allowed Eid Milad- un- Nabi (SAW) prayers at some prominent shrines including Hazratbal as well,” party said. “Earlier the authorities did not allow the devotees to offer prayers on the occasion of Khwaja Dighar as well. Such acts are deplorable.”
While taking exception the curbs on holy shrines especially following Eid e Milad-un-Nabi (SAW), NC said, “Never in history have such festive and auspicious occasions turned violent. There was no reason for the government to disallow the annual gatherings at various shrines particularly Hazratbal following the Eid e Milad celebrations. We denounce the measure in unequivocal terms.”
The party said such measures deflate the claims of GoI on the return of normalcy to valley. “If the situation is so good on ground then why are not people being allowed to throng the shrines? Why have the doors of shrines been bolted for devotees on this auspicious eve? It is perhaps for the first time in the chequered history of Kashmir that the devotees are barred from paying obeisance at Dargah, Hazratbal,” NC said in the statement.
