SRINAGAR, Nov 10: A spontaneous shutdown against the abrogation of articles 370 and 35 A and downgrading of J&K state into two union territories continued for the 99th consecutive day today in Kashmir.
Shops and other business establishments remained closed and public transport was off the roads. However, private vehicles plied on roads.
The Sunday Market from TRC Crossing to Lal Chowk witnessed huge rush of vendors, who had set up stalls. Large number of customers also turned up. The authorities had sealed the Residency Road from Radio Crossing upto Polo View.
While there were no restrictions barring around Hazratbal shrine, security men were deployed in strength. They had set up check-points at several places; and were stopping and searching the vehicles; also frisking the occupants and checking their identity cards.
Security arrangements were also tightened for Sunday Market in view of an attack on vendors and customers recently in Srinagar in which two persons including a non local was killed and 38 others injured. Government had blamed the militants for the attack saying they do not want normalization of the situation here.
The pre-paid mobile phone and internet service continued to remain suspended today also since August 5. Despite the demand by cross-section of people to restore the services, no headway has been made in this direction.
Rail service has been also affected. No train has chugged since August 5. Some days back the civil administration had directed the rail authorities to operate the service from November 11 but due to heavy snowfall the resumption of the service seems impossible in coming days.
It may be recalled here that it was an order by an officer of railway protection force in July that gave an indication that something big was going to happen in Kashmir. Amid rushing of thousands of troops to Valley from outside and subsequent panic here, the officer had informed his subordinates about the deterioration of situation for four months in Valley and suggested preventive measures to deal with the situation.
As the order got viral on social media, the officer was immediately shifted outside from Kashmir.
