JAMMU, Nov 15: Bharatiya Janata Party has welcomed the announcement of LG announcing that the election process for the Legislative Assembly will begin soon in the Union Territory.
“The beginning of election process implies the setting up of the Delimitation Commission as laid down in Part V of the J&K Reorganisation Act 2019,” stated Brig Anil Gupta, Spokesperson of the Party. BJP is thankful to the LG for indicating the setting up of the Commission since the new Assembly of the UT has to cater for seven additional assembly constituencies, identification and delimitation of reserved seats for STs and SCs and this cannot be done without fresh delimitation.
The setting up of the fresh delimitation commission has been a long pending demand of the party because it was felt that present composition of the Legislative Assembly was skewed heavily in favour of Kashmir. “It is hoped that with the fresh delimitation decade old injustice with Jammu will be undone because it has larger area as well as larger voter strength compared to the Valley. Kashmiri leaders have always been against fresh delimitation and considered it as a step to disempower Kashmir; the undue power it had assumed under the garb of Article 370,” asserted Brig Gupta.
The de-novo delimitation would ensure equitable distribution of power among the two regions and also politically empower the ST community which had been denied the same again under the garb of Art 370. In the now de-funk Assembly Kashmir enjoyed an upper hand in the political arena, over Jammu, because it had 46 seats in the state Assembly, as compared to only 37 seats for the Jammu region which allowed any and every political dispensation, with a majority in the Kashmir Valley to promote Kashmir-centric politics leading to discrimination and dominance as far as Jammu was concerned, rued Brig Gupta.
Brig Gupta further said that as usual fearing defeat, Congress has started spreading rumours and alleging BJP of manipulating early elections without a level playing field for the opposition. The allegation of the Congress is totally baseless as even a layman knows that what the LG said was beginning of election process and not holding of elections. As brought out fresh elections cannot be held without de-novo delimitation in which the entire process would take time and question of early elections does not arise. Congress is therefore advised to desist from rumour mongering.
