GMC Anantnag has canteen in small tin shed

ANANTNAG, Nov 19: With thousands of patients visiting the medical college Anantnag round the clock, the facility has no proper canteen for staff and the attendants.
A small tin shed having the capacity of four tables only is where hundreds of staff members and attendants have to wait for hours to get seated and have food and tea.
The hospital started functioning in a new building block some five years ago. Earlier this year the hospital was brought under the control of medical college which is also functioning from the same facility from last several months.
The hospital is considered as the regional hospital as it caters to the patients from all the four districts of the region and also from parts of Jammu like Kishtwar and Banihal.
Thousands of patients visit the hospital everyday while as hundreds remain admitted at the facility every night.
Despite the deputation of additional staff at the healthcare facility and increase in the rush of patients, the hospital canteen continues to be the same as it was decades ago.
Several doctors and Para-medics complained that the lack of proper canteen in the hospital severely troubles not only them but the attendants as well.
“It is irony that the three hundred bedded hospital with hundreds of medics and para-medics has a small tin shed canteen where not more than ten people can sit at a time,” a para-medic al official said.
Another para-medic said sometimes it takes them nearly an hour to have a cup of tea in the canteen.
“Since there is no space in tin shed we have to wait outside unless those having already occupied the space leave. Every doctor or Para-medic is now hesitant to go to the canteen as they know it consumes lot of time which at times leads to crisis in the hospital,” the para-medic said.
Though the authorities had also sanctioned a spacious canteen for the hospital, both for the staff and attendants but the doctors said the work on the same was halted due to unknown reasons.
“After the medical college started functioning from the hospital we were expecting the construction of the canteen within days but nothing happened so far. The canteen is at plinth level since long,” they rued.
Both the staffers and attendants also complain that the food ,tea and other eatables served at the tin shed canteen, is also of the poor quality and the administration is not doing anything to improve the quality of the food.
Principal, GMC Anantnag, Dr Showkat Jeeelani said the work on the canteen was stopped after the situation turned grim in the valley three months ago.
He said that he will again take up the issue with the executing agency so that the work on the canteen is re-started and speeded up.
