Thousands of students suffering in absence of internet facility

Downloading, filling of online NEET forms

SRINAGAR, Dec 2: With internet service suspended, thousands of students across Kashmir have started suffering due to non-availability of internet for online registration and subsequent submission of forms for national eligibility cum entrance test (NEET) for undergraduate courses.
The online forms for NEET, which paves the way for admission of students in the government and private medical and dental colleges across the country including Jammu and Kashmir, are available on the website of National Testing Agency (NTA) from today.
Prior to the suspension of internet services, the students used to access the website of NTA and download and fill up and submit the forms online from any place having internet facility particularly from the offices of career consultancies. Since the internet facility is not available, the worried students and their parents have started moving from pillar to post for the downloading and submission of the forms.
“Since the internet facility is not available, we went to the office of various career consultancies for submitting the forms. They told us they cannot do anything about it since they too have no internet facility,” said Waris Reyaz, a student.
He demanded that broadband facility be restored so that thousands of students download and submit their NEET forms, otherwise the students will be in deep trouble.
His view was shared by a large number of other students, who talked to this correspondent. They demanded that the students appearing in NEET should not be put to more trouble by continuous suspension of internet.
They said that while the authorities say they have kept internet facility available at TRC Srinagar and at respective deputy commissioners’ offices in district headquarters, but how can a small number of computers with internet cater to the rush of thousands of candidates.
Mubashir, a student, said that it takes two hours to fill up the form online, upload pictures and upload the thumb impression of the candidate. “How this process is possible with limited computers with internet and huge rush of students. The authorities should restore the internet for this purpose,” he added.
Mohammad Yousuf, a parent, said that the authorities should not subject the students to further mental stress by denying internet for filling up of NEET online forms. “Our kids have already suffered immensely on studies front due to the restrictions, shutdown and communication blockade since August 5. They could not go to schools, tuition and coaching centres or get online coaching since August. They are under lot of stress. If they have no internet facility available, how can they fill up the NEET forms. The insufficient computers with internet facility provided by government will not do in view of the huge number of students appearing for NEET,” he said.
An official said the authorities too are receiving requests from students and their parents for restoration of internet for filling up online NEET forms. “A decision to this effect can be taken by higher authorities only. Otherwise the students will have to utilise whatever internet service is available at TRC here and at deputy commissioners’ offices,” he said.
