SRINAGAR, Dec 3: On the International Disability Day, Jammu and Kashmir Handicapped Association today hit the streets to protest the alleged step motherly treatment meted out to them by the government vis-à-vis their demands.
Scores of disabled persons assembled at the Press Enclave and staged protest to press for their demands which include increase in monthly honorarium, implementation of centrally sponsored scheme and job reservation.
The protesters alleged that all the previous regimes have failed to adopt their promises made with the association on ground thereby leaving them in a helpless situation.
They said that the present administration led by Lieutenant Governor, Girish Chander Murmu needs thorough deliberations over the issues they confront.
“We have been hitting streets to impress upon the government to fulfill our demands, what is the problem to implement centrally sponsored schemes for handicapped persons in Jammu and Kashmir. We were promised that 1000 rupees will be paid as a monthly honorarium to us, however nothing of the sort happened,” said Abdul Rashid Bhat, President Jammu and Kashmir Handicapped Association.
He said that government besides announcing a sufficient monthly honorarium for handicapped should also announce job reservation for them.
“Our foremost demand is that a comprehensive job policy be announced in our favor and our monthly honorarium be increased to up to 5000 rupees,” Bhat added.
