SRINAGAR, Jan 12: A fresh snowfall occurred in today cutting Kashmir Valley from outside world by air and by road.
The snowfall started during the wee hours of this morning and continued till late this afternoon. The snowfall was light in plain areas and moderate to heavy in upper reaches.
The snowfall was light in Srinagar and other plain areas and moderate in upper reaches like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Yousmarg.
After afternoon the weather improved and snowfall stopped. But the weatherman has predicted more snow from late this evening till tomorrow afternoon in Kashmir.
The snowfall hit the air traffic at airport here and also movement of vehicles on Srinagar-Jammu highway.
However, the snowfall did not affect the life much here today. The roads needed not to be cleared of snow as the snowfall was light. The power and drinking water supply was like other days.
Kashmir has been witnessing snowfall on November 7 this winter. The snowfall was heavy at that time hitting the life badly and causing massive devastation to apple orchards. The power and drinking water supply was also affected badly.
However, the subsequent snowfalls were not that heavy and were light to moderate. The snowfall and rain and consequent landslides has been causing frequent blockade of Srinagar-Jammu national highway. Not only the passenger vehicles get stranded for days together but even the supply of essentials gets badly affected.
The air traffic also gets hit. The blockade of road results in hoarding and profiteering by some shopkeepers and sky rocketing of the prices.
