Srinagar-Jammu NHW closed again by snow, landslides

SRINAGAR, Jan 13: The national highway, only all weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was closed due to fresh snowfall and landslides, triggered by rain.
Meanwhile, the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway, the only road connecting Union Territory (UT) Ladakh with Kashmir valley, remained closed for the past over one month on Monday due to accumulation of over five feet snow and slippery condition.
The historic 86-km-long Mughal Road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region and Anantnag-Kishtwar road also remained closed for the past 34 days. There is no possibility of reopening of the road before April-May.
Traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended again on Monday due to more than a foot of fresh snowfall at Qazigund, Jawahar tunnel, Banihal and Shaitan Nallah. There were also fresh landslides and shooting stone at Moompassi in Ramban area on the highway, a traffic police official told media this morning.
He said as per scheduled announced last night, traffic was to ply from Srinagar to Jammu on Monday.
However, all Jammu bound vehicles have been stopped at Qazigund, he said, adding the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has pressed into service sophisticated machines to clear the snow and landslides.
He said once snow and landslide clearance operations are over, Jammu bound vehicles will be allowed to move provided a green signal is received from traffic police officials posted at different places.
Official sources said that large number of Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) are stranded on both sides of the Jawahar tunnel on the highway.
They said, over 250 oil and LPG tankers besides about 100 trucks carrying rice, chicken, vegetables and other material have reached Srinagar on Sunday. Divisional authorities have said that there is no shortage of essentials in the valley and people should not panic.
However, majority of petrol pumps remained closed on Saturday and early Sunday. Later during the day petrol pumps reopened and long queues of vehicles could be seen there.
Majority meat shops also remained closed as they could not received stock due to frequent closure of the highway. Price of vegetables have increased many fold in the valley.
