Train service again suspended due to snowfall in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Jan 15: After resuming for a day, train service was again suspended due to moderate to heavy snowfall since early Wednesday morning in Kashmir valley.
“The tracks, particularly in south Kashmir, are under about a foot of snow, forcing suspension of all train runs in the valley,” a railway official told UNI this morning.
He said, therefore, no train will chug on Srinagar-Badgam-Baramulla in north Kashmir.
Similarly, he said train service was again suspended on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir -- where more than one foot of snow has accumulated on tracks -- and Banihal in Jammu region.
He said train service will be resumed once snow stops and tracks are cleared of snow.
Train service on Baramulla in north Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region was suspended on Monday following heavy snowfall. The service on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal, was resumed early on Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, trains were allowed to chug on Srinagar-Badgam-Baramulla in north Kashmir, on Tuesday afternoon after three to four feet of snow was cleared from the tracks.
Train service has become very popular in the valley as it is economical, fast and safe against other mode of transport available. After August 5, when centre scrapped Article 370 and 35A besides divided the state into two Union Territories (UTs), train service was suspended for more than three months for security reasons.
