Jamait member’s body found in Mosque

SRINAGAR, Feb 13: Dead body of a prominent member of Jamait-e-Ahli-Hadees (JAH) and former militant commander was found inside a mosque at Maisuma locality of Srinagar, officials said today.
Jamiat member, Abdul Gani Dar 78 of Rusu, Beerwah in central Budgam was found dead inside a mosque at Maisuma area here this afternoon. Deceased, sources said had offered Zuhar (afternoon) prayers before being killed inside the mosque.
Dar, according to sources, died after receiving a fatal blow on his head and his body was lying inside the mosque for nearly two hours.
They said that police, after receiving information, about the incident rushed to the spot and sent the dead body for medico legal formalities. A formal case under relevant sections of law has been registered at police station Maisuma and investigation taken up to nab the assailants.
Sources said that the police is investigating the matter from all angles to ascertain the motive behind the killing of Dar aka Gani Ghazali.
“Prima facie it seems a murder. The deceased was hit with some blunt object on his head which caused his instant death. We have taken samples for forensic test besides we also try to identify culprits if any through CCTV footage,” officials said, adding the attack was carried when the deceased was busy offering prayers.
It may be in place to mention that prominent religious figure and Jamiat-e-Ahli Hadees chief, Moulvi Showkat Ahmad Shah was killed in cycle bomb blast outside a mosque in same locality nine years ago.
Another youth, identified as Munir Ahmad Mir, was also critically injured in the blast which occurred on April 8, 2011.
According a news agency, quoting police officials, Dar was the chief of militant outfit Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM) in the 1990s. A police spokesman said information about a murder of a person inside a mosque in the Maisuma area was received in the afternoon.
“Accordingly, senior police officers visited the crime spot and retrieved the body of an individual. The killed person was identified as Abdul Gani Dar alias Gani Gazali, aged about 80 years,” the spokesman said.
The police officials said there were injury marks on the head of Dar. Police reached the spot and are scanning the CCTV footage around the mosque to ascertain if Dar was murdered, they said.
The spokesman said photography and video recording of the crime spot was carried out and an Forensic Scientific Lab (FSL) team was called for the examination of the scene of the crime. “Detailed search of the premises was also carried out. Police is also examining the CCTV footage in the area,” the spokesman said, adding a case has been registered in this regard.
“We assure community members that investigation in the matter will be fast tracked, in a professional and impartial manner,” he said.
