3 militants killed in Tral encounter

SRINAGAR, Feb 19: Three militants were killed in an encounter with police and security forces in Tral last night.
Giving details a police spokesman said on a credible intelligence input, a cordon and search operation was launched jointly by police, CRPF and army at Sherabad area of Tral in Awantipora last night..
“During the search operation, the hiding militants fired on the search party. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter,” a police spokesman said.
He added that in the ensuing encounter, three militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. The killed militants were identified as Jahangir Ahmad Wani alias Umer Mukhtar resident of Ameerabad Tral, Raja Umer Maqbool resident of Lurgam Tral and Sadat Ahmad Thokar resident of Waghama Bijbehara.
As per police records, they were affiliated with the proscribed outfit Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) and were involved in various attacks, he said.
The spokesman said that Jahangir was active since 2018 and was operating as commander of HM in the area. He was involved in planning and executing several attacks in the area along with Raja Umer Maqbool.
Sadat was also involved in several cases including attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities, he said.
He maintained that there was no collateral damage during the course of encounter. Incriminating material including arms & ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All these materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other crimes.
People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any, the spokesman said.
