SRINAGAR, Mar 23: Normal life was crippled for the fifth consecutive day today in Kashmir in view of a lockdown as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of Coronavirus disease.
Shops and other business establishments and educational institutions continued to remain closed. Public and private transport was also off the roads.
Security forces and police had sealed the important roads and with barbed wire. They were asking the people to stay indoors.
However, at some places there were reports of violations of orders regarding lockdown. Some shops were open and there was movement of private vehicles and crowds were out on roads. Subsequently, the authorities decided to go tougher from tomorrow and partially amended the order about lockdown. The government also announced a two month ration in advance for the months of April and May.
The government arrested three persons in old city of Srinagar for violating the restrictions and arranging a cricket match. Two students including a female were booked in south Kashmir for concealing travel history.
The government has started shifting the students and others returning from foreign countries to quarantine centres in south and north Kashmir. Those being shifted to north Kashmir are alleging lack of facilities. Some of them alleged that officials ask them to go for paid quarantine centres if they feel they do not have facilities. Students accommodated in nursing hostel Baramulla alleged that they are not being provided even the food." Let them allow us to go for home quarantine if they cannot provide us facilities. We have not come over here on our own wish and official brought us here against our wish," they said.
Officials said they are trying to provide the facilities but those cannot be provided overnight.
Reports of lockdown were received from other districts of valley including Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Anantnag.
