New India Garden in Delhi to mark 75th I-Day

NEW DELHI, Nov 13: Ignoring the National Green Tribunal (NGT) fiat against any construction on the Yamuna river front in New Delhi, the Government is going ahead with building an "iconic structure" to be called "Nav Bharat Udyan" or "New India Garden" on the river front spread over 20.22 acres for dedication to the nation on the 75th Independence day on August 15, 2022.
Not waiting for the verdict reserved by the Supreme Court on November 6 on the Central Vista, including a new Parliament building, the government has also more than doubled the length of the Central Vista from 2.9 km to 6.3 km from ridge to river or from the India Gate to the banks of the river Yamuna in the east and beyond the Rashtrapati Bawan u to the Mother Teresa Crescent in the west.
The government wants a brand new iconic structure, which is much taller than India Gate and "withstand the vagaries of nature and remain as such for millennia to represent the current age." The Central Public Works Department (CPWD), which is handling the Central Vista project, has called a design competition for the structure to be built in the garden that should last for ages like Ashoka's edicts, Iron Pillar in Qutub Minar Complex.
The New India Garden, marking the 75th anniversary of India's Independence, will be open to the public, having the iconic structure and infotainment facilities such as Sphere of Unity, Milestones Walkway, Journey of India, Tech Dome, Amphitheatre, public amenities, etc. to showcase India's rich historical and cultural heritage, scientific achievements and unity in diversity.
The structure is proposed to be located on the western bank of the river Yamuna, its foundation in the sandy soil width a high water label. Registration for competition closes on December 11, presentation before the jury in the second fortnight of the month and the winners to be declared in the last week of December.
