Don't ban poultry from other states: Centre

NEW DELHI, Jan 13: The avian influenza or bird flu has spread to Ganderbal district in Jammu and Kashmir and four districts of Jharkhand, besides confirmation in 10 states as on Monday, the department of animal husbandry and dairy said on Wednesday.
It also advised the states not to ban supply of poultry and poultry products from other states and reconsider if the ban imposed as it would have a negative impact on the poultry industry. Instead, they were advised to ensure that the infection does not spread among the poultry since it would have a high economic cost on the poultry farmers.
Instead of any ban, the states were urged to issue advisories on Dos and Don'ts regarding consumption of poultry and eggs, so as to avoid spread of rumours and misinformation since it also causes economic loss to the poultry farmers.
The department organised a conference with the officials of 17 states, advising them to effectively manage the spread of the disease in accordance with the action plan 2021. They were also told to maintain sufficient supply of protective equipment and maintain bio-security measures in poultry farms and coordinate with the departments of health and forest.
