5462 security forces personnel die in insurgency

JAMMU, Mar 1: 16725 civilians were killed by militants while 5462 security force personnel lost their lives in ongoing insurgency in last 24 years in J&K.
According to official statistics, during the period of 1990-2013, maximum number of civilian killings took place in 1996 when the militants killed 1424 civilians in different parts of the state. Prior to this in 1995, the ultras killed 1202 civilians.
A spell of 13 years from 1990 to 2002 witnessed maximum blood shed in the state when the number of civilian killings ranged from 900-1100. A total of 13751 civilians were killed by militants during this period. The break-up included 1000 in 1993, 906 in 1991, 1069 in 1992, 1057 in 1993, 1069 in 1994, 1202 in 1995, 1424 in 1996, 1030 in 1997, 967 in 1998, 937 in 1999, 942 in 2000, 1098 in 2001 and 1050 in 2002.
The improvement in situation found its reflection in steep decline in civilian killings since 2003 which registered 836 killings. The trend continued in the following years as well with 733 killings in 2004, 556 killings in 2005, 410 killings in 2006, 170 killings in 2007, 90 killings in 2008, 71 killings in 2009, 47 killings in 2010 and 31 killings in 2011.
However, the number of civilian killings dwindled to 15 in the year 2012, the following year i.e., 2013 too registered similar number of killings.
Out of 5462 security forces personnel killed in the last 24 years, 3906 personnel were from army and other para military forces while 942 were police personnel (JKP). Besides 483 SPOs and 131 Village Defence Committee (VDC) members also lost their lives during this period.
Maximum number of security forces personnel i.e., 613 lost their lives in terror attacks in the year 2001. This was followed by 539 in 2002, 482 in 2000, 407 in 1999, 384 in 2003, 330 in 2004.
The number of security forces personnel’s killings registered steady increase from 155 in 1990 with some fluctuations in between upto 2006 which recorded 182 killings. 173 security forces personnel were killed in 1991, 189 in 92, 198 in 93, 200 in 1994, 237 in 1995 and the number dwindled in 1996 which registered 189 killings. Yet the following year i.e., 1997 again registered upswing with 216 killings followed by 268 in 1998. The number of killings almost doubled in the year 1999 which recorded 407 killings to be followed by some of the bloodiest years.
The year 2000 witnessed 482 killings and the next year i.e., 2001 saw the highest number of killings till date when 613 security forces personnel were killed in militancy related violence. This was followed by 244 killings in 2005, 182 in 2006 and the killings registered downswing in the year 2007 with 122 killings.
The number reached 15 in the year 2012 but the next year ie., 2013 yet again registered sharp increase as 53 security forces personnel were killed in the year.
Between the years 2008-2011, the number registered downswing with 85 killings in 2008, 79 in 2009, 69 in 2010 and 33 in 2011.
