GUWAHATI, Jan 31 (Agencies): Union Minister of State for Drinking Water and Sanitation Ram Kripal Yadav today asserted that the Centre was committed to fulfil Mahatma Gandhi's dream of providing pure drinking water and sanitation to every household.
The state governments would be given all possible support to achieve this goal, Yadav said while reviewing the water and sanitation schemes of Assam at a meeting held at Water and Sanitation Support Organisation (WSSO) campus here.
He urged the Assam government to give priority in providing pure drinking water and sanitation facilities in schools, for the economically backward classes, schedule classes, scheduled tribes and minorities.
"If we achieve the goal of providing drinking water and sanitation, then we will be able eradicate 70 per cent of the diseases", he said.
The Union Minister also emphasised the need for the state government to work hand in hand with the Central government to achieve the goal of Swachh Bharat by 2019.
The Union Minister reviewed the state's status of water supply and sanitation, implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission and WSSO activities in the state.
Yadav earlier also launched a Monitoring and Evaluation tool developed under RWSSP-LIS in partnership with the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MoDWS).
The World Bank has supported the MoWDS and National Informatics Centre in developing the software designed to improve accountability and good governance of service delivery to the rural communities.
