Faulty PMSSS: Kashmiri students forced to return home

SRINAGAR, Feb 3: At least 90 male and female Kashmiri students admitted in a Chandigarh College under centrally sponsored Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) were forced to leave the College and spend the night in open sky as according to students the College authorities have been demanding hefty fee from them.
These students told CNS that they got admission for B.Tech courses under PMSSS in Indo-Global College of Engineering in Chandigarh in 2013. “The College authorities asked us either to pay fee or vacate the College. The authorities informed us that Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has not released the sanctioned amount for the effective implementation of the scheme, thus making them ineligible to study in the said College,” the students said, adding that they spent the night under open sky outside the College.
“Our career has been put at stake for no fault of ours. We had come here to study under PMSSS, but the so-called free education has proved mentally torturous for us and our families,” said a student, adding that they have decided to return to Kashmir as College authorities are in no mood to permit them to sit in the class rooms.
Prime Ministers Scholarship Scheme was introduced by the then UPA Government for the students of Kashmir Valley.
When contacted, Chairman Indo-Global of Engineering, Sukhdev Kumar Shingla said that the College did not receive any grant from MRHD and as a result they asked Kashmiri students to pay from their own pocket.
Pertinently, the Ministry of Human Resource Development had launched the said scheme for the students of Jammu and Kashmir with much fanfare in 2011. Most of the students enrolled under this scheme in various colleges of India to get free education had left their studies half-way after College authorities forced them to vacate from their colleges.
