Deaths due to drowning witness a steep rise

7 die of drowning in 2 weeks
SRINAGAR, July 16: Where as the mercury has witnessed a rise in Kashmir valley during past few weeks, there has been a surge in the incidents of drowning as the rising number of people take to rivers and streams to escape the scorching heat.
According to the official data at least seven persons have lost their lives in different incidents of drowning across Kashmir valley during past two weeks.
The number of deaths due to drowning has rose to an alarming level while incidents are reported continously.
In yet another case of drowning on Sunday, a teenager died after drowning in a stream in Handwara town of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
According to police sources 16-year-old boy identified as Abid Hussain, son of Ghulam Hassan Tantray drowned when he was taking a bath in a nearby stream in Handwara. The youth’s body was retrieved on Monday.
In another case of drowning this week On July 11:A 26-year old youth drowned while taking bath in a stream in Mawer area of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. The tragic incident occurred on July 11.
According to official sources Imtiyaz Ahmad Bhat son of Mohammad Mukhtar Bhat, a resident of Wulrama drowned in a stream Mawer village while he was taking bath.
Pertinently the drowning deaths have recorded a steep rise in the month of July this year.
In another incident a 20 year old youth drowned in a stream in Pattan area of Baramulla district on July 3.
According to police sources Sources the youth identified as Riyaz Ahmed Yatoo son of Abdul Rashid Yatoo, of Pattan on drowned to death while he was taking a bath.
The body of youth was later retrieved.
In yet another tragic case of drowning two Nomad Boys died while taking bath at Tarigam village of South Kashmir’s Anantnag District on July 6.
According to sources, the boys identified as 14 year old Talib Hussain and 17-year old Ishaq Ahmad, had gone to take bath in a local Nallah and drowned to death. Later on bodies of both youth were recovered from the Nallah.
On July 4: Two persons were drowned to death when a boat carrying four youth capsized in Nigeen Lake here in Srinagar during a wind storm.
While two among the four youth managed to swim back, two drowned to death.
While as scores of drowning deaths where reported in the month of May this year also, several incidents occurred in the month of June.
On Jun 2, a 25-year-old female, a teacher at a private school, drowned in a river in Ganderbal district of central Kashmir while on a picnic.
The woman namely Kulsuma Rashid had slipped and drowned in Nallah Sindh in Ganderbal district.
On June 30 teen identified as Asif of Jammu drowned in flood channel in Bemina.
"The best way to minimise such tragic incidents is to create awareness among people especially youth who go to take bath in rivers or streams," an official said.
