Traffic movement disrupted, resumed after 13 hours

SRINAGAR, May 25: Traffic movement on Srinagar-Jammu highway resumed this evening, 13 hours after it was closed down due to landslides.
Traffic police officials said that traffic on the highway was resumed after authorities cleared the debris and made it motorable.
Earlier, a massive landslide hit the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Ramban district in the wee hours today, leading to suspension of traffic.
The landslide, triggered by incessant rains over the past two days, occurred near Battery Cheshma, completely blocking the 270-km arterial road, Suresh Sharma, Deputy Superintendent of Police (traffic), national highway Ramban, said.
The traffic on the highway plies from the twin capitals of Srinagar and Jammu alternatively due to the ongoing work on the four-lanning project.
Thousands of vehicles, which had left for Srinagar from here this morning, had remained stranded on the highway following the closure of the road.
Sharma said agencies concerned have pressed men and machinery to open the road.
