5 CRPF men killed, 2 wounded in a major Anantnag militant attack

One militant killed in retaliation, police officer suffers critical wounds, clashes erupt, internet suspended
ANANTNAG, Jun 12: Five CRPF men were killed while two others and a police officer were wounded in a major surprise militant attack in southern Anantnag township on Wednesday. In the retaliation, a militant was also killed. Following the attack authorities suspended internet services in the district while as the market places observed a shutdown.
The attack took place around 5.30 PM near Oxford Presentation School at busy K P Road.
Official sources said, militants carried out a massive surprise attack on CRPF deployment killing five of them on spot and wounding two others. They were immediately evacuated to district hospital Anantnag where doctors pronounced three of them brought dead.
Bodies of two other CRFP men were later retrieved from the site of attack and were straightway taken to district police lines. In the attack, official sources said, SHO Anantnag, Arshad Ahmad, two CRPF men and a female pedestrian identified as Snobar Jan, who suffered critical or minor wounds in the attack were referred to 92 Base Army Hospital for advanced treatment.
A health official said two CRPF personnel were stable with minor wounds while as the police officer has suffered grievous internal injuries due to the bullet.
An official said that in the retaliatory firing by forces, a militant was killed on spot while his associate managed to flee.
The identification of the killed militant was being ascertained when this report was being filed. However, some reports said that the slain militant is believed to be a foreigner.
The officials identified the killed CRPF men as ASI Neeru Sharma, Constable Santindar Kumar, Constable M K Kushwa, ASI Ramesh Kumar and Constable Mahesh Kumar.
Following the attack, witnesses said, huge contingents of counter insurgent forces including army and SOG men reached the spot, laid siege to the entire area and launched major search operation to nab the another associate of the killed militant.
As the search operation was on, locals said, youth at several places along the KP road clashed with forces who responded with tear smoke shells. The clashes between the forces and youth were on till this report was being filed.
