Army chief reviews security, operational preparedness at Siachen

LEH, Jan 9: Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane on Thursday reviewed security situation and overall operational preparedness of troops to tackle any eventuality at Siachen glacier, the highest battle field in the world.
This is his maiden visit to Siachen after taking over as Chief of the Army Staff General on December 31. Gen Naravane took charge as the Army chief, succeeding General Bipin Rawat.
General Naravane said it has always been his intention to visit Siachen. “I am glad that this is my first visit to Siachen as the Army chief,” he added.
Meanwhile, an army official told agencies that the Army chief during his visit was briefed about the situation along the LoC and border with Pakistan and China.
He said General Naravane visited forward posts of Siachen and interacted with troops deployed there. “The Army Chief also witnessing air dropping of essential commodities to troops guarding tough terrain on the Siachen glacier,” he added.
The army chief later laid wreath and paid homage to the martyrs at Siachen War Memorial at the base camp. “General Naravane also presented badges to officers for their excellent performance at Siachin,” he added.
“I would like to convey my best wishes and greetings for the New Year. It has always been my intention to come here after taking over. The weather was not very good in the first week of January. But I am happy that this is my first visit here as the Chief of Army Staff,” the Army Chief said.
“We are aware that everyone operating here faces very tough conditions, inhospitable terrain and weather. We are doing our best to make sure that whatever is required by the troops is made available to them including clothing and better rations," General Naravane remarked. Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh was also present on the occasion.
