SRINAGAR, Jan 13: Two days after a senior police officer accompanying two Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants was arrested on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the case is likely to be handed over to National Investigation Agency (NIA), official sources said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Devendra Singh, who was heading an anti-hijacking team at Srinagar International Airport, was accompanying two top HM commanders, identified as Naveed Baba, a former police constable and Asif, alongwith arms and ammunition to New Delhi.
Official sources told media that the case to investigate the motive behind the officer taking two trained HM commanders to New Delhi days before Republic Day would likely be handed over to NIA.
Interestingly, Singh was among selected officials who received the 16 member delegation of diplomats, including the ambassador of United States of America (USA), at Srinagar during their two-day visit to J&K last week to assess the situation after abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A.
Meanwhile, sources said, security agencies have raided many places in the valley during the last about 48 hours in connection with the case. “Many documentation and Rs 12 lakh have been reportedly recovered during the raids,” they added.
However, police refused to provide any details, saying that the investigation was going on in the case.
Sources said that following specific information about movement of militants, security forces intercepted a vehicle at Wanpoh in Anantnag on Saturday evening. “Security forces arrested two militants and another person onboard the vehicle,” they said, adding one AK 47 rifle, a pistol and other arms and ammunition was recovered from them.
They said the third arrested person was identified as the DySP Devendra Singh. “The militants were identified as top HM commanders Naveed Baba and Asif, who are involved in various militancy related cases,” the sources said.
They said the accused during questioning reveled that they were on way to Delhi.
